To freelance, or not to freelance, that is the question.
We get it – freelance work can spark creativity, feed personal interests, or let you tackle challenges beyond what we do at basement. We’re all for it, as long as it doesn’t interfere with your work or create conflicts of interest.
The key is balance, and to help with that, here’s our take:
Guiding principles:
Priorities matters: If a side project starts to demand more time and energy, it’s time to step back and refocus.
Avoid conflict of interests: Stay away from projects or clients that could compete with basement or our clients.
When in doubt, ask: If you're unsure whether your freelance work might create a weird situation, just reach out to José, Facundo, Lisandro, or Matias – we’re here to help.
Ok, go for it
Take on the odd freelance gig (free or paid) for a friend or clients outside of our portfolio. If you want to help with a website or design project, go for it.
Volunteer or do occasional pro-bono work for a cause you care about – a little here and there is totally fine.
Start a side business unrelated to your role here – as long as it only takes a few hours a week. Just don’t show up to work running on fumes.
Nope, don’t do it
No working full-time or part-time for basement competitors or clients or clients’ competitors.
No working full-time or part-time for an active client of basement. If a past client reaches out, let us know – it’s probably fine, but we like to stay in the loop. Keep in mind that sometimes our contracts have rules that could be breached by doing this – this applies to both past and current clients.
No consulting for basement competitors or clients or clients’ competitors.
Don’t take on anything outside of work that affects your performance. If building an app, painting, or anything else starts hurting your performance, we encourage you to reconsider your priorities.
We expect your commitment not to be compromised by your pursuit of projects or external work. Keep in mind that if this is not the case, we’ll need to have a chat about it.
